Karel Van Wijnendaele was the founder en legendary reporter of Sportwereld, the sportsmagazine of Het Nieuwsblad-De Gentenaar journal. He was also the founder and organizor of the famous Belgian classic bicycle pro-race, the Tour of Flanders.

In memory of Karel Van Wijnendaele VCKVW yearly organizes a cycling and mountainbike event, the Karel Van Wijnendaele Trophy, at the place where the first Tour of Flanders started, in Mariakerke near Ghent.
